ANIMA: 2023 impact

In 2023, within the framework of the program “Causes and agents of death, injury and disease in wildlife “, and with the aim of utilizing a large amount of data for the formulation of effective protection measures for wildlife species, ANIMA:

• Analyzed data from 62,265 cases of wildlife animals admitted to ANIMA between 2005-2022
• These cases concerned 365 different species (83.03% birds, 12.7% reptiles, 4.1% mammals, 0.17% amphibians)
• During those 18 years, the organization treated the outstanding number of 62 alien/ exotic species!

The following conclusions were drawn from the findings of the analyses:

• Alien species pose a significant threat to local and native fauna, as well as public safety, as they:
  • Outcompete and displace native species
  • Introduce diseases
  • May attack humans
• Alien species/ exotic pets that are abandoned or escape their owners’ homes
  • Lack the required skills for survival in the wild and face high risk of dying

By analyzing such a significant amount of data, we can fill important knowledge gaps and identify key elements for the development of targeted and effective conservation measures.

And by communicating the findings, we help societies reflect, in an informed way, on the wider implications of their choices, and choose to adopt practices that enhance a balanced and sustainable relationship with the environment.
